Director Professional Issues - Alan Gardner


Alan has previously served as the Northern Ireland Regional Rep during which time he build strong and enduring relationships with both the board and council. He was elected onto the board in 2007 as the Professional Issues Director, a position he still occupies.

As Professional Issues Director, Alan's responsibilities are:


- To provide a forum for informed debate
- To identify and disseminate good practice
- To provide expert advice
- To provide input into appropriate external meetings
- To provide technical input into the Society


Alan's priorities for the next 12 months are:


- To establish the Professional Issues Portfolio as the leading source of professional advice in the UK and Ireland.
- To provide material for Society workshops and events
- To focus on the 6 Policy & Research areas as defined in the Professional Group Paper, 2009
- To grow the portfolio through exploitation of business opportunities and the development of new work streams

Personal profile


Alan is Managing Director of the international consultancy, Emergency Planning Solutions Ltd based in Belfast and an Associate Course Director for the UK Cabinet Office Emergency Planning College. He sits as Professional Issues Director on the National Board of Directors of the Emergency Planning Society, holds Membership of the Business Continuity Institute and lectures on Business Continuity and Emergency Planning at Queens University, Belfast.
In his current role, Alan is involved in the delivery of consultancy, training packages, workshops and development programmes for EPS clients. Alan is also a regular contributor to seminar and events, such as the Emergency Planning Society Autumn Study and the Royal United Services Institute Emergency Response seminar. He is a member of the National Project Working Group that developed the UK National Occupational Standards for Civil Protection and also sits on the National Project Board for the development of Humanitarian Assistance Guidance. He undertakes both these positions in a private sector capacity.
Before joining EPS, Alan worked within the Business Continuity and Emergency Planning fields for eleven years. During this time, Alan was involved in a wide range of civil protection functions. Alan is a graduate of Leicester University and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and is a registered Prince 2 practitioner.
