“Despite the impressive efforts of emergency responders, much work needs to be done to avoid emergencies of the scale we witnessed this summer happening again.”
Sir Michael Pitt, December 2007
"The insurance industry played a major role in helping our country recover from the terrible floods of last summer. Insurers want to continue to provide flood cover as standard to as many customers as possible. This can only continue if the Government commits to addressing the lessons of last summer fully."
Stephen Haddrill, Director General of the ABI
Hundreds of emergency planning & business continuity professionals from the private and public sector will be descend on Torquay this summer to learn how to counteract the impending change in the UK climate.
The dangers of climate change are serious and all parts of the public & private sector must be acutely prepared to cope with all eventualities.
The Emergency Planning Society urges all emergency planning & business continuity professionals to attend its 2008 Annual Conference and Exhibition – we must plan now to respond to climate change - turning a blind eye will only create even greater challenges in the future. Climate change has to be acknowledged as one of the major risk management issues for all businesses in future years.
The conference will provide an opportunity for learning and a networking platform for individuals involved in emergency planning and business continuity – including those from private industry, central and local government, the health services, commerce, utilities, the transport industry and voluntary organisations.
Conference delegates will learn from a wide array of speakers involved at the frontline of climate change in a variety of fields: how the science of climate prediction becomes the policy of government and public agencies; what the implications of climate change are when planning your business response; how climate change and the response to severe weather incidents is viewed by the media; and the importance of leadership and corporate governance in planning your response.
Exhibition
Throughout the 2 days in the public areas of the Riviera Conference Centre, the Exhibition will be available to delegates. If you are interested in exhibiting, please contact Christine Barr at Istead via e-mail at christine@istead.co.uk

ICEBREAKER - Sunday 15th June
The conference will begin on the Sunday evening with an 'icebreaker event in the Grand Hotel in Torquay - this will have a 'seaside' theme with lots of treats in store - this is a good social event which will give the delegates an opportunity to meet and network with each other if they so wish.
CONFERENCE DAY 1 - Monday 16th June
In August 2007, Sir Michael Pitt, Chairman of the South West Strategic Health Authority, was asked by Ministers to conduct an independent review of the flooding emergency that took place in June and July 2007. The final draft of this review is due to be released in Summer 2008 - it is with this in mind that Sir Michael has been invited to present his findings and recommendations to the delegates at the EPS Conference. Following regsitration at 9.30am, delegates will have the opportunity to listen to experts from the field of climate change where they will be informed on how the Policy Makers understand what the scientists are saying and what the implications of Climate Change are on Planners. During the first day the delegates will also hear the media and Met Office's perspective of Climate Change.
There will be three parallel sessions held on each day, which will give the delegates an opportunity to attend sessions that are relevant to them with an emphasis for Public/Private and Voluntary sectors.
Day one finishes with the EPS AGM, followed by a drinks reception at the Riviera Conference Centre
CONFERENCE DAY 2 - Tuesday 17th June
During the second day the delegates will hear about Corporate Governance, leadership and how Business Continuity planning is important for Climate Change. During the second day the delegates will be afforded the opportunity to attend seminars that will be hosted in the main by the various Professional Working Groups.
The conference will end with the Conference Dinner with the Bogus Brothers entertaining the guests during and after dinner.
