Given the size of the South West region it is difficult for all members to meet on a regular basis. However the branch has representatives from each "county" area who meet together under the authority of the SW Branch Executive Committee. The 'county' reps are the conduit for information to and from every member of the Society. The Branch committee meets in the interval between EPS Council meetings to discuss national and regional issues. These Committee meetings afford an opportunity for members to have their views heard at Branch and Council level. The Chair of the Branch sits on the EPS Council.
The Committee endeavours to arrange study days and visits to establishments or venues, which provide an insight into emergency planning functions and responsibilities. In the past year we held a study day at Hestercombe House, Taunton where members from the Branch who had identified good practice within their sphere of operations, delivered presentations, workshops and discussions to stimulate delivery of good practice elsewhere. A second study day was hosted by the Met Office in Exeter and as well as a tour of the facility included two presentations on Climate change, especially in relation to flooding/drought and the effect on agriculture and the landscape; and the work of the Public Weather Service and the accrued benefits to Emergency Planners. The third presentation was by a Branch member from the Imerys (China Clay products) Company looking at the need for Emergency Planning in an industrial setting.
Each year the branch arranges an AGM to which all Branch members are invited. In 2007 this meeting was the final part of the study day at the Met Office. This meeting provides a forum for the nomination and election of representatives from the geographic 'county' areas and the election of Branch Executive Committee officers.
The national EPS Conference is to be held in Torquay in 2007 and again in 2008. The Branch Executive Committee members have been active in supporting the preparations for this. We will also be providing and staffing a stand at the Conference reception area where information about local activities and attractions will be available. Many members of the Branch attend the national Conferences which are an excellent study forum to learn about global and national emergency incidents and planning developments, and an opportunity to meet with fellow professionals.
