Welsh Branch Core Competencies Workshop
December 19th, 2007

Billed as, " The Most Important Event You'll Ever Attend", it certainly was up there with The Civil Contingencies Act consultation.

On 3rd December 30 members took part in the Core Competencies Work Shop at County Hall Cardiff (thanks to Gavin for arranging the facilities). The national "roadshow" workshop event was facilitated by Patrick Cunningham and Ian Hoult, and Chaired by the Branch Chair Keith Davies. (Two of our Members attended a "sister" event elsewhere.)

"Thought provoking and inspiring", "An essential planning exercise" and "Well done EPS" are just some of the comments made after the event.

Lots of consultation and work by individuals and teams has already taken place and will continue to do so until the close of the consultation.

If you have a view, let Patrick, Ian, Keith or myself know and we'll ensure they are taken into account.

WELSH BRANCH VISIT NEW ASSEMBLY BUILDING

On Monday 30 October the Welsh Branch met in Cardiff and were hosted by the Emergencies and Security Policy Branch, Welsh Assembly Government in Cardiff Bay. With members from across Wales gathering on the Capital, a visit to the new Assembly Building was organised and a tour preceded lunch and the Branch meeting.

This new Assembly Building, or Senedd meaning parliament in Welsh, is an innovative and state of the art design making maximum use of new technology, with a modern and user-friendly building interior. The Branch members were able to visit the committee and conference facilities and spent some time in the debating chamber, experiencing the superb acoustics that we were told will catch those secret whispers! Natural light has also been a considerable requirement and the central 'chimney', a wind assisted rotating lantern, is also used to ventilate the chamber and in doing so helps to reduce energy consumption.

Should Society members find themselves in Cardiff, do take the time to visit this inspiring building. Public access is encouraged, there is a refreshment area within the building, and guided tours can be arranged.

Schedule of Meetings

The Branch meets four times a year and we endeavour to hold one meeting in the north of the Principality, one in the south and two centrally.

Whilst the business of each meeting is intended to be riveting and deals with items formulated on a Branch generic Agenda template, each is enhanced by creating an opportunity to visit places of interest at the same time. We also invite guest speakers to give presentations on topics that are of interest to our members.

Examples of meeting/visits that have taken place in recent years are:

Dangerpoint at Talacre, Flintshire (October 2007) http://www.dangerpoint.org.uk/
The hydro-electric scheme at Dinorwig, http://www.fhc.co.uk/dinorwig.htm
RAF Valley http://www.raf.mod.uk/rafvalley
Welsh Assembly Government http://www.assemblywales.org/
BBC Wales at Llandaff http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/

Our next meeting is scheduled for 29th January 2008 will take place at Cardiff International Airport and will include a visit to areas of emergency planning interest.

The Branch Executive meet as required, but as a minimum, meet in the month before the next Branch Meeting is to be held. We also follow a generic agenda template.
